lagging rhetoric on rising lakes

This Duluth editorial is a tad bit unfair to Senator Amy Klobuchar, a champion of the Great Lakes. Superior is climbing fast, it's true, but as the editorial itself points out, it's still below average.

The big lake rose 6 inches in April alone, double its usual increase for the month. And while its level is still 8 inches below normal, the 10-inch gain during the past year means welcome water for boaters who’ve struggled at launch sites, a shipping industry that has suffered from less-than-full cargo holds, and wetlands left bone-dry.

Message received — in Duluth. But can someone please fire off a memo about all this to Washington? It seems U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar and her staff missed this week’s news. The same day the story came out that Lake Superior was on the rise, Klobuchar issued a news release noting “historic lows” for the big lake.
