Proving that water transcends politics, Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm on Wednesday will sign new Great Lakes protection legislation on a beach in the hometown of Republican Sen. Patricia Birkholz.
[Birkholz] said she was not surprised Granholm agreed.
"Our Great Lakes water belongs to everyone; the waters are not Democrat or Republican."
It's good that Senator Birkholz at last acknowledges our Great Lakes water belongs to everyone. It's regrettable that the legislation to be celebrated Wednesday is inconsistent with that principle. Tied to the Great Lakes compact, it legitimizes the sale for private profit of Great Lakes water in bottles, and thus puts public control of, and the future of the Lakes at risk.
A great deal of hard work went into these bills and this compact. It's tragic that the architects of this work are overselling this as some kind of solution to the problem of control and conservation of Great Lakes water. It's not. The new policies are about as effective in stopping water loss as caulking the floor of a bathtub but forgetting to insert the drain plug.
but it's a start, isn't it? you're so negative! lots of folks spent lots of time on the compact. pray it moves forward, right?
