This is the prize water story of the day.
Violating facilities by Great Lakes state:
Minnesota 313
Wisconsin 251
Illinois 1,140
Indiana 899
Michigan 362
Ohio 1,939
Pennsylvania 392
New York 855
What does it all mean? Well, not all violations are created equal. Some have egregious effects on water and human health, some are reporting violations. But the numbers above generally correspond to the reputations of the states in enforcing environmental laws.
Perhaps the most startling statistic is one that is nor original to the article:
But an estimated 19.5 million Americans fall ill each year from drinking water contaminated with parasites, bacteria or viruses, according to a study published last year in the scientific journal Reviews of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology
This NYT story better win a prize. We have to hope it will go a long way toward convincing this nation's lawmakers to pass the Clean Water Restoration Act. Of course, Jim Oberstar still has to introduce it. At the recent HOW conference he seemed to be asking those who care about the lakes to start a grassroots uproar over the abuses of CWA and help get CWRA passed.
