It's been called to my attention that the Michigan Messenger piece to which I linked yesterday contains this error: The program’s standards have been lowered to match minimum federal requirements and 900,000 acres of Michigan wetlands are no longer protected by state regulations. In fact, the state's scope of jurisdiction hasn't changed and the 900,000 acres are still protected by state law. And although the legislation references a federal manual for identifying wetlands, the manual has been in use by the state.
None of this detracts from the great reporting that Eartha Melzer of the Messenger has been doing. And it only makes a repugnant enough piece of legislation less destructive.
