There's plenty of Great Lakes news, but the news media fixation on the threat of Asian carp is understandable.
The problem is that it should never have come to this. The potential invasion was known almost a decade ago, and was preventable. There needs to be accountability for the federal agencies that muffed the threat.

After years of reliance on ballast water exchange by the US Coast Guard, legal evasion by the Environmental Protection Agency and futile debate by Congress, a new US Coast Guard rulemaking would make significant strides to ensure ballast water discharges to US waters, including the Great Lakes, no longer introduce aquatic invasive species. The comment period for the US Coast Guard's ballast water rulemaking ends this Friday, 4 December 2009.
