The state has postponed a decision to allow Brainerd to expand its wastewater treatment plant until regulators find out why the city's wastewater contains elevated levels of an industrial pollutant.
Elevated levels of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), a chemical formerly manufactured by 3M Co., were discovered at the Brainerd plant during a survey of 28 sewage facilities statewide, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) reported in a news release Friday.
