With regret, I link to a letter to the editor in the Detroit News that imposes the standard right-wing frame, which, when unspun, says the state has no business requiring water conservation unless it can satisfy all affected parties that it's in their self-interest. That kind of thinking has created the latest national energy crisis. Conservation is not simply a personal virtue; it's an important public ethic and increasingly so in this century. If Michigan does not act in the next few days to enact strong water conservation measures, the opportunity may not again present itself, and the Great Lakes will suffer.
